How can I subscribe to Carve?

Carve is available in print and digital forms. You can order a print or digital subscription to Carve here. Issues are published in January, April, July, and October, and gift subscriptions are available. You can also order copies of past print issues here and digital issues here.

Does a print subscription to Carve grant me access to the digital version?

Our print and digital versions are identical. Print is a hard copy delivered by mail and digital is a PDF delivered by email.

Why are there short stories online to read for free?

Carve has been publishing short stories online since 2000. In keeping with our founder’s mission, we believe our stories should always be accessible and free to read on our website. These stories are also included in the print & digital versions of Carve alongside in-depth interviews of the writers and additional features not found online, including poetry, nonfiction, Decline/Accept, and One to Watch.

Missing / Late Issues

I haven’t gotten the latest issue. Is there something wrong with my subscription?

Our issues mail on the issue date, which you can find in your Subsail account here. We’ll send you an email when we’re getting ready to deliver the issue to the printer. Issues ship in January, April, July, and October.

Issues can take several weeks to be delivered, especially to international addresses. Please be patient, but let us know if you skip an issue and we’ll send the missed issue out as soon as possible. If you believe you’ve missed an issue, let us know at

When will my first issue arrive?

Your first issue will be the next issue printed. For example, if you subscribe while the Summer issue is the current issue, your first issue will be Fall.

Privacy Policy

Why do you need my email address?

If you subscribe to Carve’s print or digital issues, your email address becomes your Subsail login name. We will also send you updates about your subscription, general Carve announcements, and a Carve Community Newsletter, with special news and updates for staff members and subscribers only.

If you opt in on our website to receive additional emails from Carve, we will use your email to send information about Carve events, promotions, contests, and issues. We do our best to use your email thoughtfully and sparingly, and we will never sell your email address.

Do you sell or rent any of my personal information?

We occasionally rent our list of submitters and subscribers to like-minded organizations for a one time only use. We will only rent U.S. mailing addresses, never email or phone numbers, because we believe contact by phone or email is too invasive. List rentals are an additional source of revenue for Carve that enables us to continue publishing.

Can I order single print back issues?

Is there a large print version of Carve available?

Not at this time, but we recommend downloading the digital PDF of Carve.

Editorial / Submissions

What is the status of my submission?

You can check the status of your submissions at any time by logging into your Submittable account. If you are having trouble with Submittable, please contact their help desk.

Will you send me comments on my story?

We do our best to offer feedback when possible, but due to the large number of submissions we receive and our limited volunteer staff we cannot guarantee comments.

Can I change the story I submitted with an updated draft?

No. To keep our reading process as efficient as possible, we cannot make changes to existing submissions once they’ve reached our reading committee. If you’d like to update your submission, please withdraw your submission via Submittable and resubmit.

Do you publish sci-fi/fantasy/etc.?

We enjoy fiction with elements of genre. We recommend reading our archive before submitting to get a sense of what we like to publish.

Can I send a story that is over 10,000 words?

No. Please see our submission guidelines here.

Can I send an excerpt of a novel?

Yes, but only if it is under 10,000 words and works as a stand-alone story.

Do you consider translations?

Yes, with the consent of both the writer and the translator.

Do you accept simultaneous submissions?

Yes, but please use Submittable to withdraw your piece if it has been accepted elsewhere. If you’ve submitted a packet of poems and one is accepted elsewhere, please use the form here.

Can I skip the reading fee?

You can skip the fee if you submit via mail to our mailing address listed below. Please include a cover letter and SASE.

Do you nominate writers for prizes and anthologies?

Yes. If we nominate your work or a prize or anthology, we will reach out by email to let you know.

Jobs / Internships

I’d like to work for Carve. Do you have an internship program?

Please see our volunteer page here. We occasionally accept interns, but we are always reviewing reader applications. The best way to find out when Carve is seeking editorial staff is to join our staff as a volunteer reader.

Carve Classroom

I submitted a story for a Carve Critique. Who will review it, and when will I hear back?

You will receive an estimated timeline when you pay your invoice. Editors or members of our Resident Reading Committee, readers who have been outstanding readers for Carve for at least a year, complete Carve Critiques.

I need to cancel my spot in an online writing class. What do I do?

SELF-STUDY: You may withdraw enrollment for self-study and receive a full refund up to the start of class. Once class has started, no refunds are given.

GUIDED FEEDBACK: You may withdraw enrollment for guided feedback and receive a full refund up to one week prior to the start of class. If less than one week, you will receive a 50% refund. Once class has started, no refunds are given.
