Dedicated Carve Readers,

It's good to be back. Our 2010 Raymond Carver Short Story Contest was a success, and now we're working harder than ever to deliver honest fiction.

Here's a rundown of all the changes we've made or will be making to ensure Carve is the destination magazine for writers and readers alike:

MORE READERS = LESS BACKLOG
We've more than doubled our staff of readers to avoid future submissions backlogs. Read all about our newest recruits on the updated staff page.

RENEWED MISSION
Online publications like ours have become the norm and now even garner respect in the industry, but what does this mean for us? How will we continue to contribute to the lit community? Find out in the editor's renewed mission statement.

READING IN THE DIGITAL AGE
Mobile and e-reader platforms are the future, and that's where we're headed. Expect iPhone, iPad, Kindle and more versions of our content available by the end of the year. These are being designed with the reader in mind - we want it to be a premium experience.

RAYMOND CARVER SHORT STORY CONTEST
The Raymond Carver Short Story Contest issue has settled into the fall issue permanently. This means our submission, announcement, and publishing dates will be the same every year. More information below.

We're offering more than a cash prize for our Raymond Carver contest now - the winning stories will be read by selected literary agencies and authors are considered for representation. (More details to follow.)

OF SPECIAL, RARE, OR UNUSUAL INTEREST
We're pleased to introduce a new annual contest: the Esoteric Awards. Every spring issue beginning in 2012 will be dedicated to a pre-selected, unique theme or interest. First up: LGBT. We'll be accepting fiction and/or cover photography submissions beginning in March.

THE ANTHOLOGY STRIKES BACK
For our readers, we are issuing two new anthologies this year, for 2008 and 2009/10. They'll be available on the Kindle or iPad as well. Expect them in June and October, respectively. Future anthologies are scheduled for the beginning of each year..

Whew! I think that about covers it. But our list doesn't stop there. We plan to offer more content beyond the quarterly issues. It's a long wait between issues, so we want to help tide you over with tidbits from past contributors, book reviews and recommendations, interviews, and more.

We hope you're as excited as we are about our future. Let us know what you think - contact us and your message will go straight to the Editor's inbox!

Happy Reading and Writing,

Matthew Limpede - Editor
