Letters Emails to the Editor
last updated 4/27/2008
I wanted to thank you again for the
time and care you took when writing suggested edits for my story. After
revising it according to your recommendations, another journal picked it up for
a future issue--many thanks to you.
Congratulations! It's always great to know even when we send out a
rejection, writers don't give up! Having an open mind is essential to
being a successful writer.

Thanks for posting the
book recommendations--I love discovering new works
and especially by authors I might not have considered before.
From,
An avid reader
We're glad
you have enjoyed our recommendations! We'll try to keep updating them and
expanding the list as time goes on. Feel free to send us yours as well!

I wondered when (and if)
stories previously published in Carve
will be available on the new website. Melvin
Sterne maintained a list of authors and titles,
but no permanent URL's. Will the new site make
the "old" list available, and possibly add
actual links to those stories?
-ALP
My ultimate
goal is to have every story previously published
archived online, with the full text of the story
available. Unfortunately this process is
going to be rather cumbersome as I only have
paper copies of the stories published before
2006. (There were some technical
difficulties with getting electronic copies of
the stories.)
If you
have been previously published in Carve
before 2006, you can help me by sending me your
story in Word or similar format to
editor@carvezine.com with an updated bio.
If you were published in 2006, we have an
electronic copy of your story and will be
working towards archiving it online.
Additionally, if you need a URL to your story
for scholarship/award/application purposes, let
me know and I will try to add a link as soon as
possible.

At some point do
you plan on a short summary of the transition? I'd be
interested in learning the nature of the change of place and
staff?
-SL
In late 2006, the
previous editor, Melvin Sterne, announced that Carve
Magazine would be taking an indefinite hiatus after
nearly 7 years of publication. I emailed Mr. Sterne to
see if he would be willing to let someone else take the
reins of the magazine and he was happy to do so. The
transition went into effect January of 2007, and Mr. Sterne
has stepped down as editor and creative director to devote
his full time to other literary and scholarly goals.
•••
Congratulations.
It looks terrific. I shall be interested in following your
progress.
I wish you the best.
-BJ
Thank you! I'm very
excited about the future of Carve, and knowing that
people are interested as well keeps me motivated to make
this magazine the best there is.
•••
Thanks for reading
all us aspiring authors' work, it's very valiant and brave
work. -JA
It's my pleasure to read
through every story, looking for the cutting-edge of today's
finest fiction.
•••
Thank you for your
taking the time to respond. It is a rarity in this business
to get feedback without paying someone...Writing fiction has
made me a little jaded.
-TS
I'm glad you were receptive to my comments. I've had people post angry replies to my
comments/suggestions on bulletin boards and blogs. I
try to stress the subjectivity of being an editor,
because ultimately that's what it comes down to.
But as a great teacher once told me, "If you can't take
constructive criticism, you won't get anywhere as a
writer." Try not to get too jaded; just keep an open
mind. With writing, there's nothing to lose by trying
something different.
