Dedicated Carve Readers,
The winter issue is finally here, and within it,
the winning stories from the 2007 Raymond Carver Short Story Contest.
Chosen from over 350 entries, these five stories represent a diverse range
of talent and emotion.
There is no secret to winning a literary short
story contest. Every editor has a unique taste, and thus the stories
that rise to the top of the pile are very different from magazine to
magazine. STill, there are shared elements in winning stories that one
can take note of: vivid characters, precise dialogue, raw emotion, and a
first sentence that reels the reader in and never lets them go.
Many thanks to everyone who participated in the
contest, and I extend my gratitude to Ben Fountain, who faced the difficult
task of choosing the top three winners from the short-listed finalists.
In addition to the top three winning stories, there are two stories featured
that won the "Editor's Choice Awards." Together, all five represent
Carve's best: the culmination of a new year and a new direction for the
magazine.
Looking back on this past year, I am extremely
grateful for all the joy Carve has given me. From working
with authors to organizing the contest and recruiting my volunteers, it's
all felt effortless because it's been so satisfying.
I'm looking forward to this next year.
Until then, sit back and enjoy this winter issue. The stories are our
most diverse yet. I'm certain there's something for everyone to enjoy.
Sincerely,
Matthew Limpede - Editor |
