June 15, 2007 Dedicated Carve Readers, The summer issue is here, and with it the beginnings of the archival process and a new theme for the magazine. Summer has always been my favorite time of year; a time when there's plenty to do and plenty of daylight to live by. It's easy to become wrapped up in summertime fun and put away the books in favor of going out to a lake, or the beach. But I hope our readers can find an hour or two to sit by the computer and read through this summer issue. There's quite a bit of treasure to find in this issue's stories. Samurai Bluegrass by Craig Terlson is a heartbreaking tale of hope and loss, with the narrator searching for far more than a simple day with his nephew. Turning the Bones is a story about grief shared by a couple, yet presented in a fascinating way in an unfamiliar world. If You Don't by Rob Bass is a wonderfully crafted love story, minimalism and honesty at its best. And Hybrid by Stephanie Dickinson is alternately hilarious and endearing, as the young narrator tries to find her own self in a city that's never fully found by any one person. Enjoy these stories, all of them, and keep coming back for updates on the site. The Carver Awards are next, and I'm sure that will bring about some more wonderful, incredible, and honest short stories. Sincerely, Matthew L. Editor, Carve Magazine
